The designs and costs for the redevelopment of the city centre markets were presented to the Council’s Executive on 10th July 2018, who gave their approval to the £21 million project. This will see the council progressing plans to develop Darley Street Market.

An artist’s impression created by our architects, Greig and Stephenson provides a first look at what the new food market could look like above. The proposed external design shows a significant glass frontage to encourage an open feel to the market, creating a landmark public market building along with a new quality market square that will provide a dynamic vibrant and diverse shopping and leisure experience

The Darley Street Market development provides an opportunity to remodel the city’s core shopping area by relocating its markets to Darley Street to secure the future vitality of this important area of the city centre.

The plans are part of a wider strategy to help support local trade and revitalise the area of the city centre from Darley Street to the ‘Top of Town’ area around Oastler Market. The area will form part of a ‘Top of Town Masterplan’ by the Council, which is in the early stages of development. The plan will provide a strategy to enable the creation of an attractive, resident friendly, healthy and sustainable environment in the city centre, with landscaped, traffic calmed street infrastructure, and high quality public realm and community spaces.

The design of the new market was influenced by the various consultation exercises undertaken by the Council which led to the new market in Darley Street receiving planning approval in May 2019.

It is anticipated that construction will commence in August 2020, with the Market opening its doors in Spring 2022.

As our plans progress then these as well as regular updates on the market redevelopment can be found here.
