All fired up: Tiles created by opening weekend visitors now installed at the Darley Street Market

Over 120 tiles created by the people from across the Bradford district whilst visiting the opening weekend of Bradford Council’s Darley Street Market in July have now been installed at the Courtyard entrance.

With tiles celebrating everything that is great about the Bradford district, the installation was commissioned by Bradford Markets and includes pieces capturing iconic Bradford buildings, the market traders’ fingerprints, Bingley 5 Rise Locks, there is even a tribute to the world-famous Bradford born artist David Hockney.

Bradford Markets worked with Salt Pots, a ceramic studio in Saltaire, to run special workshops at the Market, created specifically to produce this legacy piece of public art. The works were then, glazed and fired by Laura Sagar and Sue Rhodes who own Salt Pots before being mounted onto frames by Nicola Murray from arts organisation Kynd and installed by Mick Bedford a Bradford born production artist.

Laura from Salt Pots, said of the installation: “We feel truly honoured and grateful to have been involved in such a fantastic installation. During the workshop, we had the pleasure of meeting the incredible people of Bradford and were inspired by the unique stories behind each painting. Salt Pots being part of the beautiful village of Saltaire is deeply meaningful to us, and we hope this project becomes a lasting part of Bradford’s history for years to come.”

Nicola Murray, Kynd, says of the concept: "Kynd’s aim is to bring people together. This artwork celebrates Bradford, handmade by Bradfordians. We imagine the artists returning to see their work in this beautiful building throughout their lives, feeling pride in their creativity, their identity, their market and their city."

Everyone is invited to come and see the tiles, now in place at the lower Darley Street entrance to the market.
