It is full steam ahead for Bradford Council’s regeneration of its markets, as it confirms the purchase of a key building as part of the redefining Darley Street.

The Council has now acquired the old Marks and Spencer unit, whilst the confirmation of the Compulsory Purchase Order demonstrates the support and strong momentum behind the project.

With approval from the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, it is another stage of success for the £21million scheme. Bradford Council will move into the next phase of the transformation, looking to create a bespoke new building on Darley Street that will boast an exciting sustainable market and new public square.

Confirming the Compulsory Purchase Order is a significant milestone towards creating a colourful, vibrant and welcoming modern market, where quality local and international food produce will attract existing customers and new visitors.

Cllr Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder, Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “This is an important step for both the plans to reinvent the market offering in Bradford and the ambitious plans to reshape Bradford’s city centre.

“We are fully committed to delivering the extensive redevelopment of the markets and with the Compulsory Purchase Order, we’re confident we will can progress with our plans for regenerating Darley Street.

“Our goal is to bring together a wider variety of people to a space that offers so much more than a market. We hope everyone is looking forward to enjoying the new destination.”

As well as the extensive fresh produce offering, Bradford Council are determined to bring a dynamic range of eating and tasting opportunities, focusing on making a memorable customer experience to put the city on the map as a major food destination.

Work is expected to start on site in spring next year, with the demolition of several properties making way for the construction of the new market.

The Bradford markets project is part of a broad package of initiatives designed to boost investment, growth and employment across the Bradford district.
